Jobhunter
Microsoft, the tech giant, has reportedly disbanded its internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team. This decision has sparked a wave of discussions across the industry. The team’s leader expressed disappointment, stating that the company’s commitment to diversity was "no longer business-critical". The DEI team, once a major part of Microsoft’s corporate structure, was reportedly shut down due to 'changing business needs’. This move has raised questions about the future of DEI initiatives not only at Microsoft but also across the tech industry. The former lead of the DEI team sent an internal email to a significant number of Microsoft staff last week, accusing the company’s executive leadership of "investigated and evidenced discrimination, harassment, and toxicity." The email also hinted at a broader trend, suggesting that "DEI programs everywhere are no longer as critical" as they were during the pandemic period. This shift is allegedly due to the looming conservative policy plan, Project 2025. The timing of these changes has led to speculation that businesses are reevaluating their path forward, especially if their U.S. federal contracts could be at risk. In recent years, other tech companies, including Meta and Google, have begun to make significant cuts to their DEI programs as well. Is the disbanding of Microsoft’s DEI team a one-off incident, or does it signal a broader trend in the tech industry? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this matter. Sachin Gaikwad
Is this act by the tech giant means a warning bell for all? Does that mean we are heading towards a monopoly and slave mentality? Edited July 18 by Sachin Gaikwad
