Trendingger
Major record labels have launched a $2.6 billion lawsuit against internet service provider (ISP) Verizon. The conglomerates, including Universal, Sony, and Warner, allege that Verizon has been providing high-speed service to a vast community of online pirates. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, accuses Verizon of ignoring the mass piracy occuring among its customers. The music industry giants claim to have sent more than 340,000 infringement notices to Verizon since 2020. The labels are seeking as much as $150,000 per infringement, alleging that Verizon violated copyrights of more than 17,000 songs. This totals to over $2.6 billion in damages. The labels argue that Verizon contributes to and profits from the copyright infringement by its subscribers. This lawsuit marks an aggressive step from the music industry to combat piracy. Other internet service providers, including AT&T and Comcast, have likewise been taken to court for allegedly facilitating mass piracy of their content.
