Many gamers woke up to a shocking announcement on August 2, 2024: Game Informer is shutting down its doors. A cornerstone of gaming journalism for over thirty years, the magazine fell victim to layoffs as its parent company, GameStop (which acquired it in 2000), underwent restructuring.

Founded in 1991 under FuncoLand, Game Informer rapidly became a dominant force in gaming media. Renowned for its in-depth reviews, exclusive interviews, and comprehensive coverage, it captivated millions of gamers worldwide. At its peak, the magazine boasted a circulation of 8 million copies in the U.S., cementing its status as a global gaming authority.

The announcement was followed by confirmation that the entire Game Informer staff had been laid off by noon that day. Employees were caught off guard by the closure, with many learning about the layoffs while away from the office. Some were unaware of the news until checking social media. Ironically, the final issue, number 367, features a cover story on ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard,’ a stark contrast to the magazine’s own uncertain future.

Game Informer was more than just a publication; it was a community hub. Its closure is a significant loss for the gaming community. Kyle Hilliard, the magazine's content director, and former video producer Ben Hanson expressed their disappointment and frustration over the closure on social media.

While the exact reasons for GameStop’s decision remain unclear, the company’s financial challenges likely played a role. Game Informer’s closure is the latest in a series of cost-cutting measures as GameStop navigates turbulent waters.

This closure marks a pivotal moment for the gaming industry. As digital media reshapes the landscape, traditional print faces unprecedented challenges. Game Informer’s legacy serves as a reminder of the industry’s dynamic nature and the importance of adapting to change.

Were you upset by the closure? Feel free to share your favorite Game Informer memories in the comments below.
