Tesla has pushed back the production timeline for the Cybertruck's range extender. Initially scheduled for late 2024, the range extender's production is now pushed to early 2025. Given Tesla's history of pushing back deadlines, this delay likely comes as no shock to many.

While we eagerly await the range extender, let's break down its details. When Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck, its impressive range was a key selling point. However, the production model fell short of the promised 500 miles, delivering closer to 340 miles. To address this shortfall, Tesla has introduced a range extender—an additional battery pack that can boost the Cybertruck's range to over 470 miles for the dual-motor version and over 440 miles for the tri-motor Cyberbeast.

The range extender carries a price tag of approximately $16,000 with a non-refundable deposit of $500. While Tesla promises professional installation through its service centers, the real catch lies in its size. The battery pack occupies roughly one-third of the truck's bed, significantly reducing its cargo capacity. Notably, the add-on will not be removable, further limiting the truck's versatility. Despite Elon Musk's claims of ample cargo space remaining, the practicality of this trade-off is debatable.

While extended range is undoubtedly a major advantage, especially for long journeys and heavy hauling, the reduction in cargo space and the hefty price tag might make some buyers reconsider. It's like paying a premium for extra miles while sacrificing the Cybertruck's signature "truck bed" feature.

The range extender adds another layer to the Cybertruck's already skyrocketing price tag. Tesla no longer offers the base $61,000 model, with the most affordable option now starting at a hefty $99,990. This raises the question: Would you pay an extra $16,000 for increased range while sacrificing significant bed space in an already expensive truck?

The true test of the range extender will be how the market responds when it launches in 2025. In the meantime, let's hear your thoughts in the comments below.
