Katy Perry’s latest music video, Lifetimes, has hit a sour note with Spanish authorities, who are now investigating the production over potential environmental infractions. The video, which showcases the stunning landscapes of Ibiza and Formentera, has drawn attention not just for its visual appeal, but for its filming location—on the protected dunes of S’Espalmador in the Balearic Islands.

The Environment Department of the Balearic Islands is probing the matter, alleging that the production team failed to secure the necessary permits to film in this ecologically sensitive area. The dunes, part of the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera natural park, are a critical habitat, home to a range of rare and endangered plant species as well as a haven for migratory birds. The park’s significance is further underscored by its role in protecting the coastline from erosion, helping to maintain the delicate ecological balance.

Directed by Stillz and produced by Dr Luke, the Lifetimes video sees Perry basking in the natural beauty of these protected areas, with scenes specifically filmed on the restricted dunes. Although the imagery captures the serene beauty of the Balearic Islands, it has also sparked concerns about the impact on the region’s fragile ecosystems.

The natural park, recognized for its rich biodiversity, supports over 200 species of birds, including flamingos, storks, and the critically endangered Balearic shearwater. The preservation of these dunes is not just about maintaining their beauty, but about sustaining the vital habitats that depend on them.

Though the Environment Department has clarified that the filming didn’t constitute a criminal offense against the environment, the sandy situation did violate local regulations due to the lack of appropriate permits.

While the video certainly looks dreamy, it seems the dream came at a cost. Perry’s camp hasn’t weighed in yet, but fans are all ears.
