SpongeBob-SquarePants-Nickelodeon-25th-Before-Now-1.jpg

Few kids’ shows have made as big a splash as Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants. This year, the iconic yellow sponge celebrates his 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of laughter, undersea adventures, and enduring pop culture influence.

Because everyone loves good character development, the official SpongeBob social media account has shared before and after images of the designs of Bikini Bottom’s residents.

For example, while SpongeBob’s core design has remained largely consistent, subtle changes have occurred so his appearance stays fresh throughout the years. In the early seasons, he looked slightly more angular, with sharper edges and a more geometric shape. As the show progressed, his design became softer and more rounded, giving him a friendlier and more expressive look.

Created by the late marine biology teacher turned animator Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants first aired on Nickelodeon on July 17, 1999. The show quickly became a cultural phenomenon, captivating audiences with its quirky humor, lovable characters, and vibrant underwater world of Bikini Bottom.

Over the past 25 years, SpongeBob and his eclectic group of friends—including best friend Patrick Star, squirrel scientist Sandy Cheeks, grumpy neighbor Squidward Tentacles, and money-obsessed boss Mr Krabs—have entertained generations of viewers. The show's unique blend of slapstick comedy, clever wordplay, and occasional adult-oriented humor has allowed it to maintain appeal across various age groups.
