In a bold move to refresh its visual identity, Illinois has launched a statewide contest to redesign its flag. This initiative, championed by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and the Illinois Flag Commission, seeks to create a new emblem that better represents the state's diverse character and rich heritage.

A Fresh Perspective on State Identity

The current Illinois flag, featuring the state seal with an eagle and the motto 'State Sovereignty, National Union,' has been in use since 1970. While it has served as a recognizable symbol for over half a century, many believe it's time for a change. The redesign effort aims to craft a flag that more accurately reflects the state's blend of urban sophistication, suburban charm, and rural traditions.

Contest Details: Your Chance to Make History

The flag redesign contest is open to all Illinois residents, offering a unique opportunity to leave a lasting mark on state history. Here are the key details:

  • Submission period: September 3 to October 18, 2024
  • Up to three designs per participant
  • Submissions are accepted online or by mail
  • File formats: PNG, GIF, or JPG (5 MB or less)

Participants are encouraged to incorporate elements that symbolize Illinois' natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural diversity. While there are no strict rules on shape or color, designers are advised to keep their creations simple and impactful, ideally using no more than three colors. Do take note that your designs cannot be AI generated.

Selection Process

After the submission deadline, the Illinois Flag Commission will carefully evaluate all entries, selecting ten finalists that best capture the essence of Illinois. These top designs will then be put to a public vote starting January 1, 2025. Residents will have the chance to choose their favorite or opt to keep the current flag. The ultimate decision will rest with the state's General Assembly, taking into account the results of the public vote.

To ensure widespread participation and awareness, the commission is partnering with schools and libraries across the state. This collaborative effort aims not only to generate diverse submissions but also to educate residents about state symbols and foster a deeper connection to Illinois' heritage.

A Call to Creativity and State Pride

This contest is more than just a design competition; it's an invitation for Illinoisans to reflect on what their state means to them. Whether you're an artist, a history enthusiast, or simply a proud resident, your vision could become the new face of Illinois.

For those inspired to participate, detailed submission guidelines and entry forms can be found on the Illinois Secretary of State's website. Who knows? Your design could be flying high over the Prairie State for generations to come.
