Despite being under house arrest in New York and awaiting deportation proceedings, she’s been granted special permission by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to travel to Los Angeles for the show. Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, gained notoriety for posing as a wealthy German heiress and defrauding banks, hotels, and individuals. Her captivating deceptions have inspired Netflix’s Inventing Anna and an HBO Max documentary called Generation Hustle. Now, she’s taking her story to a different kind of stage, where she’ll be competing under strict conditions. In true Delvey fashion, she’s already found a way to embrace her legal restraints, announcing plans to bling her ankle monitor to match her dance costumes. The announcement of Delvey's participation has stirred up a mixed bag of reactions. While some find humor in the situation, others are questioning the ethics of giving a platform to someone with ongoing legal troubles. Critics, including the hosts of The View, have questioned the message this sends, particularly given her ongoing legal issues. Whoopi Goldberg called out ICE’s decision to allow Delvey to travel for the show, comparing it to the struggles of families separated by deportation. “I think back to all the families who’ve had family members arrested by ICE, who have gone to the courts to get their dad, or their brother, or their mother back, and this woman, they gave her permission to go do this,” Goldberg lamented, questioning, “Is there a two-tiered system here with ICE?” “So she committed another crime, and what is the, I don’t know, consequence of it?” Sunny Hostin chimed in. “A Bejeweled ankle monitor. A federal Bejeweled ankle monitor and a spot on the television show.” One thing’s for certain: all eyes will be on Anna Delvey on ABC and Disney+ as she attempts to cha-cha her way from infamy to dance fame this September 17. https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2024/09/05/anna-delvey-dancing-with-the-stars/75090061007/ https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/04/arts/television/anna-delvey-dancing-with-the-stars.html https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8nr405lpwo https://www.buzzfeed.com/natashajokic1/anna-delvey-dwts-legal https://www.thewrap.com/the-view-dancing-with-the-stars-anna-delvey-reaction-abc/ Quote
