KeyboardKitty
In a delightful blend of artistry and democracy, Michigan recently held its inaugural 'I Voted' sticker design contest. The competition, which attracted over 480 submissions, not only showcased the state’s creative talent but also served as a unique platform to engage citizens, particularly the youth, in the electoral process. The contest, spearheaded by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, was structured to include voices from all walks of life. With three distinct categories—elementary/middle school, high school, and general public—the initiative ensured a diverse range of perspectives and artistic styles. From the sea of entries, nine winners emerged, each capturing a unique aspect of Michigan's spirit and the essence of civic participation. The designs ranged from majestic bald eagles to whimsical portrayals of the Great Lakes, reflecting the state's rich natural heritage and patriotic fervor. However, it was an unexpected entry that stole the show. One of the winning designs in the Elementary and middle school category, created by 12-year-old Jane Hynous from Grosse Pointe Farms, features a muscular werewolf enthusiastically ripping off his shirt, howling against the backdrop of an American flag. The words 'I Voted' proudly adorn the top of this unconventional sticker. This eye-catching design even caught the attention of late-night host John Oliver on his show Last Week Tonight. Jane’s inspiration for this vivacious design came from an unlikely source—a doodle she created out of boredom while watching 'National Treasure' in her social studies class. This charming anecdote not only adds to the sticker’s appeal but also serves as a reminder that creativity can strike at the most unexpected moments. One can’t help but wonder, though, if Jane was inspired by pop culture icons like Wolverine (a fitting nod to the Wolverine State), the Incredible Hulk, or perhaps a patriotic twist on An American Werewolf in London. Regardless of the source, this werewolf, howling in the name of democracy, has certainly left its mark on Michigan’s electoral landscape. The contest’s impact goes well beyond aesthetics, engaging citizens—especially young people—in the electoral process. As Michigan prepares for the upcoming election, the nine winning designs, including Jane’s Werewolf, will stand as vibrant reminders of the importance of civic participation. The stickers will soon be available for local election clerks to order, and could be proudly worn by voters across the state on Election Day, November 5th. https://www.michigan.gov/sos/resources/news/2024/09/04/secretary-benson-announces-2024-i-voted-sticker-design-contest-winners https://www.vice.com/en/article/michigan-i-voted-sticker-contest-winner-werewolf/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/09/11/werewolf-i-voted-sticker-michigan/ https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/05/style/michigan-i-voted-sticker-werewolf.html Image: Raquelsfranca| Dreamstime.com
