Jeep, a prominent brand under the Stellantis umbrella, has announced a significant recall affecting over 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs worldwide. The recall encompasses Jeep Wrangler 4xe models manufactured between 2020 and 2024 and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models produced from 2022 to 2024.  This action comes in response to a potential fire risk identified in these vehicles.

Scope of the Recall

The recall covers approximately:

  • 154,032 vehicles in the United States
  • 14,038 in Canada
  • 673 in Mexico
  • 25,502 in markets outside North America

What's the Issue?

The recall was initiated after a review of customer data prompted an internal investigation, revealing 13 reported cases of fires. These fires occurred in vehicles that were parked with the ignition off. The cause of the fires is believed to be related to the vehicles' high-voltage batteries, which may have an internal defect that increases the risk of a fire. Stellantis has estimated that approximately 5% of the recalled vehicles could be affected by this issue.

What Should Owners Do?

In light of this potential hazard, Jeep has issued several important safety guidelines for owners of the affected vehicles:

  • Refrain from charging the car until further notice.
  • Park the car outdoors, away from structures and other vehicles.
  • Be aware that the fire risk decreases significantly when the battery charge is depleted.

Recall Process and Customer Support

Jeep is working diligently to develop a solution for this issue. The company has committed to notifying affected customers promptly once a remedy is available and service can be scheduled. In the meantime, owners are encouraged to carefully follow the instructions provided in their recall notices. For further assistance, Jeep owners can contact customer care at 1-800-853-1403 or visit mopar.com/recalls for detailed information and updates.

Safety First

This recall highlights the challenges automakers continue to face in ensuring the safety of hybrid and electric vehicles. While these vehicles offer significant environmental benefits, strict safety standards are crucial to managing potential risks like fire hazards. Staying informed about recalls affecting your vehicle is always essential. For the latest updates, visit the NHTSA website or check your manufacturer's website to ensure your vehicle remains safe.
