The streets of Irvine, California, are about to get a jolt of excitement as the local police department unveils its latest addition: a Tesla Cybertruck.

Irvine PD has made history by becoming the first law enforcement agency in the United States to add a Cybertruck to its fleet. However, don’t expect to see this angular marvel pulling over speeders anytime soon. The department has earmarked the vehicle for a different mission: serving as a mobile educational tool for drug abuse prevention and other outreach initiatives. Well, it’s not every day you see a Cybertruck rolling up to your local school

The total cost for the $95,000 Cybertruck, after installation of special equipment, was a steep $153,175.03. For Irvine PD, the vehicle’s striking design and advanced features are worth it, as it hopes it will drive more interest to its educational efforts and make a lasting impression on students and the community.

And while this vehicle won’t be chasing down criminals anytime soon, it is still equipped for emergencies and can respond when necessary.

To some extent, the Cybertruck itself (and its anti-apocalyptic features) is natively built to hold up against emergency situations. Its ballistic-grade stainless steel body offers enhanced officer safety, while the bio-weapon defense mode and HEPA filtration system provide protection in hazardous environments. The four-wheel steering and improved maneuverability give it an edge over traditional police vehicles in certain scenarios.

These are then boosted with enhancements made by electric vehicle specialists Unplugged Performance, specifically tailored to meet the needs of first responders. The truck also features advanced lighting systems, a custom electrical setup to support police equipment, and a rifle mount concealed under the rear seats.

Expressing excitement about the new cop car, Ben Schaffer, CEO of Unplugged Performance, shares: “We’re thrilled to partner with the Irvine Police Department to debut the nation’s first official on-duty Cybertruck for their DARE program. The Cybertruck embodies the future of law enforcement with Irvine paving the way by integrating this advanced vehicle into their fleet."
