Spotify is letting listeners put their own (artistic) spin on playlists with a new feature to create custom artwork for their carefully curated collections.

The ‘Create Cover Art’ tool, now in beta testing, gives both free and premium subscribers on iOS and Android devices the ability to design personalized playlist covers. Users can access this feature through their playlist’s three-dot menu, where they’ll find options for text styling, color selection, effects, and exclusive stickers. The tool also accepts photo uploads for those wanting to start with their own images.

While users can experiment endlessly with different designs, there’s one catch—each playlist can only display one custom cover at a time. New artwork automatically replaces previous designs, though those wanting to preserve their older graphic creations can work around this by creating duplicates of their playlists.

To kick things off, Spotify has collaborated with musicians Clairo, Jamie xx, and Arlo Parks, alongside visual artists like Imogene Strauss and Cey Adams, to showcase the feature’s creative possibilities in playlist presentation.

For Strauss, the new feature is “super exciting” and evokes some nostalgic feelings, reminding her of her days drawing on her computer.

“It takes me back to learning to draw on the computer as a little kid, customizing my blog in middle school,” Strauss expresses. “I take a ton of pride in getting my playlists just right, putting a custom cover on them makes it that much more special. Everyone will have a ton of fun with this.”

Currently, the beta version is available in 65 markets for English-language users.

For those with access to the feature, the process is straightforward: select a playlist, tap the three-dot menu, choose ‘Create Cover Art’, and let creativity flow. Listeners can then share their unique masterpieces across social media platforms.
