Welsh food artist Nathan Wyburn has unveiled a portrait of Marilyn Monroe made entirely from Pop-Tarts, highlighting his signature blend of culinary creativity and artistic flair. Known for transforming everyday objects into art, Wyburn continues to blur the line between food and fine art, making his work both accessible and imaginative.

This portrait of Monroe pays tribute to Andy Warhol’s iconic 1967 silk-screen prints of the Hollywood star. Using over 120 Pop-Tarts, Wyburn offers a playful twist on Warhol’s vision, blending nostalgic pop culture with contemporary artistry. The piece took more than 10 hours to complete, with each pastry carefully arranged to capture Monroe’s distinctive features.

Wyburn is no stranger to turning ordinary items into captivating portraits. In previous works, he crafted King Charles III’s likeness using Marmite and toast and depicted former Prime Minister Liz Truss with lettuce. His ability to transform familiar objects into art demonstrates his creativity and resourcefulness, encouraging audiences to view art through a new lens.

Commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Kellogg’s beloved Pop-Tarts, this project goes beyond novelty. Wyburn says it embodies the spirit of pop art by transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary.

The portrait will be featured at the Pop (T)Art Gallery Experience in Bethnal Green, East London, this weekend. Visitors to the pop-up gallery can also try their hand at creating edible art using Pop-Tarts, blending culinary fun with artistic expression.

With Wyburn’s playful tribute to Monroe, this project celebrates not only the nostalgic charm of Pop-Tarts but also the heart of pop art—elevating the everyday with humor and creativity. What delicious masterpiece will he dream up next?
