Beatles-Last-Song-Now-And-Then-AI-1.jpg

It’s not every day you hear about the Fab Four returning from Yesterday. However, their latest track, Now and Then, is making tomorrow’s history, as artificial intelligence helps The Beatles bridge a 45-year gap in musical time.

Almost half a century after they parted ways, the Beatles are back in the Grammy spotlight.

The AI-assisted track, released on November 2, 2023, has officially earned two Grammy nominations, marking the first time an AI-enhanced song has reached such heights. The song is now in the running for the Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance categories at the Grammies.

Now and Then has received a great deal of attention for its use of artificial intelligence to resurrect John Lennon’s voice from a 1978 demo. While some fans initially assumed the band was using deepfake technology, the truth is more nuanced. The team behind the track used a form of AI called “stem separation” to clean up and isolate Lennon's vocals from a low-quality demo he recorded decades ago.

This allowed the rest of the band—Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and even archived contributions from the late George Harrison—to add their parts and create a crisp and seamless new recording, giving fans a taste of something they thought they would never hear again.

The AI intervention complies with Grammy guidelines, which specify that, although “only human creators are eligible,” the ceremony permits works featuring “elements of AI material” in certain categories.

For a band that broke up nearly 50 years ago, the Beatles continue to surprise us. Now and Then has found its place in popular culture as what many consider the “final song” by the band, reaching number one on the UK singles chart and rekindling the magic of the group’s golden years. The process of creating this track spanned years, during which the original demo was carefully cleaned up and enhanced to produce a high-quality, studio-ready master.
