LEGO is giving builders a lift with its latest tribute to Renaissance creativity: a new build inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine. This detailed set, set to launch on January 1, 2025, lets da Vinci’s vision take flight—but with bricks instead of feathers.

The LEGO Icons Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine is modeled after da Vinci’s ornithopter, the bird-like contraption he famously designed to explore human-powered flight. The 493-piece set comes with textile-covered wings that can be flapped, as well as a tail mechanism driven by strings, pulleys, and hinges, mirroring the inventor’s sketches.

Also included is a display stand and a LEGO minifigure of the Italian polymath himself, depicted in the midst of sketching one of his masterpieces.

This new release is part of the LEGO Icons series, which is known for bringing authentic, detailed replicas of significant cultural landmarks and inventions into the hands of builders. It also follows LEGO’s earlier Mona Lisa Art set, another da Vinci tribute.

The build is designed to be both challenging and rewarding, balancing an educational component with the pure enjoyment of building. With a new minifigure version of Leonardo to guide your journey, the set invites builders to imagine what it might have been like to conceive of such designs in an era before modern aerodynamics.

The brick-built flying machine, priced at $49.99, serves as a  reminder of human curiosity and the desire to push boundaries—even if humankind wasn’t yet ready to get off the ground back in da Vinci’s day.
