Apple's iPhones integrate ChatGPT's search capabilities as a shortcut to make Siri smarter

If you’ve ever wanted to talk to your phone and get more than just Siri’s usual quips, the new SearchGPT shortcut might be just what you’re looking for. OpenAI has brought its SearchGPT capabilities to iOS devices through a clever integration with Apple’s Shortcuts app.

 

The new feature allows users to initiate web searches via ChatGPT, bringing the AI’s conversational touch to everyday queries, all from the comfort of your Home Screen. This integration is particularly handy for getting real-time updates, like sports scores, stock quotes, or the latest news. The SearchGPT action offers not only timely answers but also helpful links to back up the information—a cool potential workaround for those of us tired of browsing endless search results.

 

Currently, the feature is available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers, but there are plans to roll it out to free users in the coming months.

 

Those interested in accessing SearchGPT need to ensure they are on the latest version of the ChatGPT app on their iPhone or iPad. Once updated, they can add the ‘Open SearchGPT’ action into the Shortcuts app and even link it to Siri. Beyond Siri, the integration provides a more personalized user experience through custom shortcuts. By setting up specific actions, users can now quickly launch SearchGPT with web search enabled, straight from their Home Screen or by using voice commands. 

 

Looking ahead, the integration will become even more seamless with the rollout of iOS 18.2 in December. Apple plans to forge a direct connection between ChatGPT and Siri, allowing users to engage with the AI assistant through Apple's native voice interface (instead of launching the app, which, until December, is what they presently have to do). This upcoming enhancement would expand Siri's capabilities while maintaining the natural conversation style that ChatGPT users have come to appreciate.
