Firewaller
Microsoft Edge web browser users have recently encountered security warnings about Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) changing their icons or names, as spotted by Bleeping Computer. This measure has been implemented to safeguard users from potential scams or deceptive practices. The recent rebranding of Twitter to ‘X’ triggered this security alert within the Microsoft Edge browser. When a PWA’s icon or name is altered, Edge displays an alert, prompting users to review the update carefully and, if necessary, uninstall the app if it appears suspicious. These platforms come with their specific icons, which can be added to the home screen or taskbar, and can run automatically. Both Chrome and Edge introduced the safety alert for PWAs in 2021, aiming to enhance user protection and security. While the warning currently still exists, it will likely be addressed and resolved shortly. The abrupt shift of Twitter’s brand to ‘X’ has resulted in several issues, including potential trademark conflicts (including with Microsoft, no less) and permit-related challenges for signage changes.
