Newly released footage from 1983 shows Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, predicting a technology that closely resembles today's ChatGPT and other AI models.

The clip, part of a digital exhibit by the Steve Jobs Archive, captures Jobs during a presentation at the International Design Conference in Aspen. In this presentation, Jobs envisioned a future where machines could interact with humans in a conversational manner, much like how ChatGPT operates today.

Jobs described a technology that could respond to questions and think like a human, likening it to an interactive book. He expressed his frustration with traditional books, which, despite their wealth of knowledge, could not answer questions or engage in dialogue.

Jobs hoped for a future where machines could capture the essence of human thought and provide interactive responses, a vision that aligns closely with the capabilities of modern AI chatbots.

"I think as we look towards the next 50 to 100 years, if we really can come up with these machines that can capture an underlying spirit, or an underlying set of principles, or an underlying way of looking at the world, then when the next Aristotle comes around, maybe if he carries around one of these machines with him his whole life, his or her whole life, and types in all this stuff, then maybe someday after the person is dead and gone, we can ask this machine, ‘Hey, what would Aristotle have said? What about this?’” he proclaimed at the conference.

This prediction, made over 40 years ago, shows his foresight and ability to Think Different.

“And so my hope is someday when the next Aristotle is alive, we can capture the underlying worldview of that Aristotle, in a computer, and someday some students will be able to not only read the words Aristotle wrote, but ask Aristotle a question and get an answer. And that’s what I hope that we can do. So this is the beginning.”

This vision is now a reality with AI models like ChatGPT, which can simulate conversations with historical figures and provide information in an interactive format. For example, for Salvador Dalí's 120th birthday this year,  the Dalí Museum in St Petersburg, Florida, invited visitors to speak directly to the artist himself and ask him questions via a recreation of his lobster telephone, thanks to language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and ElevenLabs’ Eleven Multilingual V2.

Jobs had foreseen these innovations arriving "in our lifetimes.” He further elaborated, “We are now entering another revolution of free energy. Macintosh (Mac computer) uses less power than a few of those light bulbs, and yet can save us a few hours a day or give us a whole new experience. And it’s free intellectual energy. It’s crude, very crude, but it’s getting more refined year after year after year, and in our lifetimes, it should get very refined.
