Enter Stage Rite
By the looks of it so far, Joker 2: Folie à Deux isn’t getting the last laugh. The highly anticipated sequel has danced its way into the record books by receiving the lowest CinemaScore ever given to a movie based on a comic book, with audiences handing it a D rating. This less-than-stellar reception pushes it past 2015’s Fantastic Four, which previously held the dubious honor of a C-. The story, directed by Todd Phillips, picks up with Arthur Fleck awaiting trial in Arkham Hospital and introduces Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel. Their twisted relationship unfolds through a musical lens, a creative decision that appears to have divided audiences more than united them. Despite the star power and the unique approach, the execution seems to have hit a sour note with many moviegoers, with many feeling disconnected from the narrative. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes scores paint a grim picture, with a 33% critics score and an even lower 30% audience score, placing it among the lowest-rated big-budget productions in recent memory. With such high expectations following the first Joker—which grossed over $1 billion and earned a solid B+ CinemaScore—Joker 2 is struggling to find its footing in the shadow of its predecessor's success. This stumble at the box office is even more surprising given the film’s hefty budget, reportedly hovering between $190 and $200 million. https://variety.com/2024/film/news/joker-2-earns-d-cinemascore-1236169039/ https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/after-joker-2-landed-low-rotten-tomatoes-score-became-t-lowest-rated-comic-book-movie-ever-another-metric https://comicbook.com/movies/news/joker-2-cinemascore-d-grade-worst-comic-book-movie-reviews-rotten-tomatoes/ https://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/joker-2-folie-a-deux-d-cinemascore-all-time-low-comic-book-movies/ Image: Chingyunsong | Dreamstime.com
