'Joker 2' to sprint to screens at home this month after a laughable reception

If you’re still on the fence about whether to catch Joker: Folie à Deux before it leaves theaters, worry not. Warner Bros is dancing to a different tune as its musical take on Gotham’s clown prince faces the music—the studio has announced an unusually swift digital release for Joker 2, making the film available for home viewing just 25 days after its theatrical premiere.

 

Todd Phillips’ musical sequel, which pairs Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck with Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, will hit digital platforms on October 29, 2024, following its October 4 theatrical debut. The quick transition to home release comes amid disappointing box office numbers and mixed critical reception.

 

The film’s bold artistic choices, particularly its transformation into a musical, have sparked heated debate among audiences and critics alike. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes awarded the film a 32% score, marking a sharp decline from its predecessor's 68% rating.

 

The movie also earned an unwanted distinction: the lowest score ever recorded for a comic book adaptation by CinemaScore.

 

For collectors, Folie à Deux will also arrive on physical media, including 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 17, 2024. A limited edition steelbook will be part of the release, offering fans a chance to own a piece of the film, even if its theatrical run didn’t live up to expectations.
