When it comes to digital navigation, Google Maps remains a steadfast companion for millions worldwide. Recently, a buzz has enveloped the online sphere, and it centers around a feature that promises to enhance our daily journeys: Glanceable Directions. Let’s delve into what this trend is all about.

This innovative feature, which has been eagerly anticipated for over a year,  is designed to enhance the user experience by providing turn-by-turn directions and live ETA directly from the device’s lock screen.

Imagine a scenario: you’re rushing to catch a train, your phone securely tucked away in your pocket. You need to check your route, but unlocking your device feels cumbersome. Enter glanceable directions—a clever solution that allows you to view your route and estimated time of arrival (ETA) without the need to unlock your phone. Whether you’re walking, cycling, driving, or using public transit, this feature provides a quick snapshot of your journey.

On Android devices, glanceable directions appear as system notifications, while iOS users benefit from Google’s Live Activities integration. Before officially starting navigation, the route preview window displays your path and ETA. Say you’re exploring a new city and want to walk from your hotel to a nearby coffee shop. After inputting the coffee shop’s address, you’ll see your ETA and route. With glanceable directions, you can start walking immediately, bypassing the formal navigation initiation. As you move, the on-screen arrow adjusts to your progress, updating the route if you take an unexpected turn.

The allure lies in simplicity. No more fumbling with your phone, unlocking it, and navigating back to the app. Glanceable directions seamlessly integrate into your daily routine, providing essential information at a glance. It’s a small but impactful step toward a distraction-free travel experience.

To explore glanceable directions, ensure you’re running the latest version of Google Maps. Head to your profile, tap Settings, and find the new option under Navigation settings. Enable it, and you’re ready to experience smoother, more efficient navigation.
