Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki looks pretty unrecognizable beardless

Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary filmmaker behind Studio Ghibli’s most enchanting animations like My Neighbor Totoro, has spirited away his facial hair! Not exactly hair-raising news, I know, but the silver beard is part of his iconic look. 👨‍🦳

The revelation came in a video message posted on the official Oscars YouTube channel, where a clean-shaven Miyazaki, alongside his colleague Toshio Suzuki, expressed gratitude for their film The Boy and the Heron receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature (alongside Disney and Pixar’s Elemental, Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams, and Netflix’s Nimona).

It’s like Colonel Sanders without the goatee or Tony the Tiger without his stripes.
