Marshy
Are these the crowning glory for history buffs and art collectors alike? A set of drawings by a young Queen Victoria, created when she was still a princess in her teens, is headed for auction. The four sketches, contained within a Victorian album, offer a rare look into the artistic pursuits of the iconic monarch. Three of the drawings, dated July 1833, depict figures on horseback—a knight, a woman, and a veiled woman. These early works, created when Victoria was just 14 years old, are thought to reflect the influence of her drawing instructor, George Hayter, who also served as the court painter. The fourth drawing, from 1838, showcases a crowned and sashed woman seated regally—a possible self-portrait made just a year after Victoria ascended the throne. Its style provides a unique window into the young Queen’s artistic development, perhaps revealing a more carefree and expressive side before the weight of her reign fully settled. The album, which also includes works by other artists and royal ephemera, is expected to fetch between £1,500 and £2,500 ($1,900 to $3,170) at the July 9 sale at Roseberys Fine Art Auctioneers in London.
