Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama passes away suddenly at age 68

The world of manga and anime lost a legend on March 1, 2024. Akira Toriyama, the influential creator of the globally adored Dragon Ball franchise, passed away at the age of 68. The official announcement from Bird Studio, Toriyama's production team, attributed his death to an acute subdural hematoma, a type of blood clot in the brain.


Toriyama’s impact on the anime and manga industry is undeniable. Dragon Ball, with its blend of martial arts, humor, and fantastical characters, became a global phenomenon, spawning numerous seasons of anime, movies, video games, and merchandise.  His other works, including Dr Slump and Sand Land, also garnered acclaim for their unique art style and engaging narratives.






Dear Friends and Partners, we are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma. He was in age of 68.


It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also he would have many more things to achieve.


However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world.


Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come. We inform you this sad news, with gratefulness for your kindness during this lifetime.



A small funeral service was held for Toriyama’s immediate family.  The announcement from Bird Studio requested that fans refrain from sending flowers or gifts.


Future of Dragon Ball Uncertain


While details remain unclear, it appears Toriyama was working on several projects at the time of his passing. This includes his involvement with the ongoing Dragon Ball Super manga and the upcoming Dragon Ball: DAIMA anime. It's too early to say how these projects will be impacted by his passing.



The news of Toriyama’s passing was met with an outpouring of grief and appreciation from fans and fellow creators worldwide.  His legacy as a master storyteller and artist who brought joy to millions is sure to be celebrated for generations to come.
