Trendingger
General Motors (GM) has announced the discontinuation of the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Malibu. This decision marks the end of a remarkable journey that spanned over six decades, with the Malibu being a constant presence since its debut in 1964. GM’s move is not merely a cessation of an old model, but a strategic pivot towards electric vehicles (EVs). The Detroit-based automaker is investing a staggering $390 million in its Kansas assembly plant, a clear indication of its commitment to next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EVs. The Malibu, which enjoyed global sales of more than 10 million units, will cease production in November 2024. This decision underscores GM’s transition from traditional cars to more crossover and sport utility vehicles. Interestingly, the Malibu is the last Chevrolet car offered in the United States, apart from the Corvette. Despite a 12.5% dip in sales in the first quarter of 2024, the Malibu saw a 13% increase to 130,000 in 2023. This fluctuation in sales figures highlights the changing consumer preferences and the increasing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.
