Brandisher
Images: Mareks Perkons / Dreamstime and Randy Duchaine / Alamy Starbucks, the globally recognized coffee brand, has reportedly initiated legal proceedings against ‘Starbuds Flowers’. The bone of contention is the alleged imitation of Starbucks’ iconic siren design logo by Starbuds, a mobile marijuana business operating out of a converted food truck in New York City. Starbucks contends that Starbuds’ logo bears an uncanny resemblance to its own, with the double-ringed green circle and crown-wearing mermaid. The coffee giant asserts that Starbuds is intentionally mimicking its brand, causing confusion among consumers. The legal documents reveal the company’s dissatisfaction with Starbuds’ use of the contentious imagery on pre-roll joints and other marijuana products. This isn’t the first time Starbucks has found itself in a trademark dispute. In 2017, the company settled a $10 million lawsuit over the Unicorn Blended Beverage. More recently, in 2022, Starbucks filed a lawsuit alleging copyright and trademark infringement over fake sites. In the current lawsuit, Starbucks demands that Starbuds cease using the disputed logo, destroy any products bearing it, and surrender any profits derived from its use. The coffee behemoth’s move to protect its brand identity underscores the importance of trademark rights in the corporate world. Will Starbucks’ lawsuit brew a storm in the world of logo copyrights, or will it be just another tempest in a teapot? Share your views in the comments below.
