Community Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 Image via Rolex The world’s most expensive Rolex ever sold at an auction is back on display, four years after it disappeared from the spotlight. The Oyster Cosmograph Dayton Ref 6239, dubbed the ‘Paul Newman’, sold for US$17.75 million in 2017. Now, visitors can get a peek at the iconic timepiece at the brand-new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Rolex, one of the sponsors of the institution, had arranged for the watch to re-emerge in the public eye once again. The watch, was once owned by actor Paul Newman, hence its nickname. According to Robb Report, this Rolex model didn’t cost as much in the 60s, but soon became a highly-sought-after piece thanks to Newman’s fame. Alongside the display, Rolex has also opened a permanent gallery in the museum. With an exhibition named the Stories of Cinema, the watchmaker will display unique installations that tie in with the theme of filmmaking. [via Robb Report, cover image via Rolex]
