'The Bean is back': Chicago reopens iconic Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor to public after year-long Millennium Park renovation

After a year-long hiatus, Chicago’s beloved landmark, the Cloud Gate, colloquially known as ‘The Bean’, has once again opened its reflective surface to the public.

 

 

Millennium Park, the area surrounding this iconic sculpture, a masterpiece by British-American artist Anish Kapoor, had been under renovation since August 2023.

 

The renovation project included the construction of accessible ramps, new stairs and a waterproofing system. These enhancements aimed to improve the overall visitor experience and ensure the longevity of this cherished city symbol.

 

The Bean, formally recognized as the Cloud Gate, is a massive structure weighing 110 tons. Its liquid mercury-inspired reflective surface has made it a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, offering unique views of Chicago’s skyline.

 

City officials expressed their excitement about the reopening, inviting everyone to "Come back and get your #selfie!". The reopening of this tourist hub near Michigan Avenue marks a significant moment for the city, signaling a return to normalcy and a renewed appreciation for public art.
