Firewaller
Microsoft has confirmed that a cyberattack was the root cause behind the latest service disruption on July 30, 2024. This incident left numerous users unable to access key services such as Outlook and its popular game Minecraft. The tech behemoth revealed that the outage was triggered by an attempt to inundate its Azure cloud platform with traffic, aiming to knock it offline. This method, known as a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, was unfortunately successful due to an error in Microsoft’s defensive measures. Microsoft has since apologized for the inconvenience caused to its global user base. The issue was resolved within ten hours, a significantly shorter duration compared to a previous outage caused by a flawed software update by its vendor-partner CrowdStrike. This incident underscores the increasing threat of cyberattacks and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. It serves as a stark reminder for businesses worldwide to continually enhance their defenses against these evolving cyber threats.
