If you're a proud owner of a Samsung slide-in electric range, you may want to check your model number immediately. Samsung Electronics recently issued a major recall impacting over 1.1 million units sold nationwide between May 2013 and August 2024 due to a potential fire hazard.

The culprit lies with the easy-to-reach knobs on these ranges. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that these knobs can be accidentally switched on by people or curious pets. This poses a serious danger if flammable objects, like oven mitts or dish towels, are left near the cooktop.

This isn't a minor concern. Reports indicate this design flaw has already sparked roughly 250 fires, causing significant property damage in at least 18 cases. Even more concerning are the reported injuries (eight requiring medical attention) and the tragic loss of at least seven pets.

Here's a Breakdown of the Situation

  • Products Recalled: Samsung Slide-In Electric Ranges (various model numbers)
  • Dates Sold: May 2013 - August 2024
  • Price Range: $1,250 - $3,050
  • Locations Sold: Major appliance stores nationwide (Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's) and online at Samsung.com
  • Reason for Recall: Fire Hazard due to accidental knob activation

What to Do

  1. Identify Your Model: Locate the model number on your Samsung slide-in electric range. It's typically situated on a label inside the upper left corner of the oven door or inside the storage bin at the bottom.
  2. Check for a Recall: Visit the CPSC website or Samsung's recall page to see if your model number is included in the recall.
  3. Contact Samsung: If your model is affected, contact Samsung Electronics America Inc. immediately. They'll provide a free repair kit that includes knob locks or covers to prevent accidental activation. You can reach Samsung toll-free at (833) 775-0120 (Monday-Friday, 9 am - 8 pm ET) or by email at rangesupport@sea.samsung.com. More information is also available on Samsung's website.

Free Knob Locks or Covers

Samsung is offering owners of recalled ranges a free set of knob locks or covers (depending on the model) to prevent accidental activations from occurring. Customers may continue to use their slide-in electric ranges while awaiting their set of free knob locks or covers.

Staying Safe Until Repair

While you wait for the repair kit, the CPSC recommends these precautions:

  • Never leave flammable items (towels, oven mitts, pot holders) on or near the cooktop.
  • Keep children and pets away from the range to avoid accidental knob activation.
  • Double-check that all knobs are turned off before leaving the kitchen or going to bed.

If your Samsung range has Wi-Fi, Samsung recommends enabling the "Cooktop On" notification on the Samsung SmartThings app. This sends alerts to your phone whenever a burner is turned on, adding an extra layer of safety.

By taking these steps and following the official recall instructions, you can significantly reduce the fire risk associated with your Samsung slide-in electric range. Remember, prioritizing safety in the kitchen is paramount for protecting yourself, your loved ones, and your home.
